Apple Pressing in April

This years Apple Pressing on the afternoon of 19 April was another successful nursery event. Despite the aweful weather and a poor apple season, participants brought scrumped apples and made good use of Malcolm McKenzies apple press and the new education centre - with roof but no windows or doors!

Having frozen the apples made for very clear juice and lots more of it (over 30% more juice apparently).

Events for May and June

Every Friday morning we will be in the Nursery with other volunteers. Come along and join our friendly group, bring along some morning tea to share, do some work and take away some plants for free.

We will also be collecting the last few seeds for the season - Cabbage tree, broadleaf, Hebe, lemonwood and others. Or come and purchase some plants ready to plant and contribute to the Education Centre building.

In June we will be having “Cuttings Workshops” 14 and 28 June - teaching people how to propagate new plants fromn cuttings. You can bring along cuttings that you wish to grow or learn the techniques and go home and try them out. The cuttings will make roots over winter and be ready to pot on in spring.

January News

January has been a month of weather extremes - a challenge for a nursery that relies on rainwater!

January is probably the busiest month of the year in the nursery. Still pricking out seedlings, potting on, weeding and watering are all full-on jobs that need to be done by our volunteers.

It was difficult to find a shady spot sometimes for morning tea! The backdrop to this location is the start of the Community Nursery Education Centre Building - watch this space for progress!

Storm clouds gather over the nursery just in time. Watering every couple of days  through January has been a very time-consuming but necessary task. When the rain does come it is a welcome relief!
