Hawthorndale Cubs pot up at the SCN 13 August 2018

A torch lit walk through to the education centre excited the cubs.  Then is was down to work… potting up a NZ native into their pots that they had decorated the week before at Cubs, before continuing with the potting up, helping out the community nursery in the work we do.  A great night out as the Cubs learnt how to pot up and gained a bit more knowledge about NZ native trees.

Matariki Night – 23 June 2018

We had a great Matariki celebration in the Education Centre on Saturday night. Around 50 people came and joined with Kiwi Conservation Club kids in making lanterns, Matariki music and song, toasting marshmallows and enjoying shared food.  Lanterns were made from glass jars with Matariki designs and stones painted.

A quiet moment of reflection in the dark was led by Linda – and encouraged everyone to think about things that had happened in the previous year and what was to look forward to in the new season.

Even the stars and the planets were out and we all enjoyed seeing them through Lloyd’s telescopes.

Thanks to Bronwyn for organising the KCC activities and to Linda and Ray for running the artwork table for lanterns, to Liam and Brian for laying out the silver ferns leading people through the tracks and to Lloyd for showing people the stars with his telescope and to everyone for joining in the fun and providing some very yummy food to share.

Activities with Bronwyn

We held a KCC event at SCN 22 April 2018.  It wasn’t that great for being outside exploring so instead we built insect houses for around the Southland Community Nursery – a great way for KCC to give back to the nursery where we hold a lot of our events.  We camouflaged the insect homes finding nature to stick on.  We also did some bug hunting, bug identification, bug classification and colouring in!  A break in the weather after our building allowed a walk around the pond, finding homes for the newly built insect houses.  We are looking forward to revisiting these in time to see who has moved in!

7 May 2018 – Aparima College visited the nursery to learn about what’s involved in plant propagation and restoration.  They are scoping out ideas for what they can do with their patch.  They saw restoration plantings from 1 to 20+ years ago, showing them what can be achieved.

Printmaking Workshop with Jo Ogier 5-6 May 2018

Again this year we were privileged to have Jo Ogier come down from Christchurch to tutor a two day workshop on Printmaking. I wish I had been there to watch as the results of peoples work over the two days look amazing. Thanks Jo for another excellent workshop.  Watch this space as we are planning another workshop later in the year. Chris
