Community Nursery Opening Friday 18 September 2026
After a good winter break, the Community Nursery will be re-opening on Friday 18 September 2026.
The winter in Southland has had few frosts, but lots of rain. While we have all been away, there has still been some work done in the Nursery, keeping weeds down and replacing weed matting and building a second new bench in the shadehouse – thanks Ray and thanks mainly to Geoff for weeding, with a few other helpers. Pond planting continued – thanks Jason for the great drone photo below.
Other events while closed were accompanying Jo Ogier and husband John (with Riki and supporters from Hokonui Runaka and Jim and Marcella and supporters from Eastern Southland Gallery) winning the Supreme Award at the Murihiku Creative Arts Awards in August (the exhibition “He Wai Apakura – Te Ara Pounamu The River’s Lament - A Pathway of Treasures” will be at Te Atamira Gallery in Frankton from 26 November to end of January 2027).
We organised a “Hands Off Our Conservation Land” at Bushy Point in August and recently attended botanist Cathy Jones 80th Birthday Dance Party in Nelson in September!
Jobs to be done on opening day will be cleaning weedmat and paths, starting the new seasons potting up and pricking out and weeding always! A few seeds are coming up early in spring and natives are starting to flower already. Watering will not be needed!!
Plant orders are going out of the Nursery and the main Bushy Point planting day is coming up on Sunday 4 October 2026. The Nursery plays a big role in this planting and will be putting out plants on Friday 2nd October, and it will be great to see as many people as possible on the planting day.
