James Hargest visit Monday 26 June 2017
On a chilly morning Monday 26 June 2017 over 30 year 9 and 10 James Hargest students came to the nursery to learn how to propagate native plants from seeds and cuttings. After an introduction and walk through the frozen orchard and nursery the group were divided into two with Bronwyn and Amy leading their group to the restoration area – discussing creating habitats, planting requirements and collecting seeds (the few still available – kohuhu, Manuka and koromiko) and then cutting material from broadleaf and koromiko. The highlight was seeing 12 newly hatched ducklings on the pond!
Meanwhile back in the Education Centre Chris and Linda talked about the different types of seed and then proceeded to have a hands-on session creating cuttings of tree fuchsia and then Hebe elliptica and broadleaf. It is hoped that some of the information and hands on experience will help the group bring their school riparian project into fruition.
